The Features of Makeup Contour

Makeup contouring is a technique that involves applying different shades of makeup products to create the illusion of depth and dimension on the face. Contouring can enhance the natural features of the face, such as the cheekbones, nose, jawline, and forehead, or create a more dramatic look by altering the shape of the face.

Contouring products can be either cream-based or powder-based, depending on the desired effect and skin type. Cream products are more blendable and hydrating, but they can also crease and fade more easily. Powder products are more long-lasting and matte, but they can also look cakey and dry if applied too heavily. Some people prefer to use both types of products, applying cream first and setting it with powder for a more flawless finish.

The basic steps of contouring are:

  • Choose a contour shade that is one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone. The shade should have a cool or neutral undertone to mimic the natural shadows on the face. Avoid using shades that are too warm or orange, as they can look unnatural and muddy.
  • Choose a highlight shade that is one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. The shade should have a warm or luminous undertone to reflect the light and add glow to the face. Avoid using shades that are too white or frosty, as they can look harsh and chalky.
  • Apply the contour shade to the areas of the face that you want to recede or slim down, such as the hollows of the cheeks, the sides of the nose, the temples, the jawline, and the hairline. Use a small angled brush for precision and blend well with a fluffy brush or a sponge.
  • Apply the highlight shade to the areas of the face that you want to bring forward or accentuate, such as the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the center of the forehead, the cupid’s bow, and the chin. Use a small fluffy brush or a finger for a subtle effect and blend well with a sponge or a fan brush.
  • Set your contour and highlight with a translucent powder or a setting spray to make them last longer and prevent creasing.

Contouring can be customized according to your face shape and personal preference. For example, if you have a round face, you can apply more contour to the sides of your face to create more definition and angles. If you have a long face, you can apply more highlight to the center of your face to create more width and balance.

Contouring can be a fun and creative way to enhance your features and express your style. However, it is important to remember that contouring is not a necessity and that you are beautiful with or without makeup. Contouring should be done with moderation and respect for your natural beauty.
